Kale Cultivation in Cambodia

Growing Kale in Cambodia

KaleAccording to my experience, I don't have enough land to cultivate, so I plant in pots, mostly during the cold season from November to January. It's easy to grow, and it produces a lot of leaves quickly. I enjoy using its leaves as fresh vegetables in various Khmer dishes.

According to the document, there are more than three types of kale. I grow the curly-leaf variety, as shown in the photo. Kale also provides several health benefits—refer to the document or consult a doctor for more information.

To grow kale, select high-quality seeds. I prefer using the curly kale variety. Awaken the seedlings (see video:awake seed)

Kale seedling
I sow the seeds in a tray. When they grow 3 or 4 leaves, I nurture the seedlings to make them strong, or I can plant the seedlings directly from the tray. Either way, I ensure the seedlings get enough sunlight to promote growth and strength.

After planting in the pot for three months, I can start harvesting the leaves for food. I continue to harvest the leaves for about a year, and my kale keeps producing more leaves. I also make sure to use my natural liquid compost to encourage more leaf growth. It's a very nice crop.

Kale pot

Kale is not easy to care for during the rainy and hot seasons. Additionally, this plant is easily attacked by worms. So, I regularly check and monitor the plants, use natural pesticide that I produce, and pray and water them twice a week. This results in healthy growth.

This video shows you the process from nursery seed to planting and harvesting the leaves for food. Kale Nursery Secrets: Thriving in Cambodian Climate

Daung Khtis ( A coconut with creamy skin when ripe) in Battambang

A coconut with creamy skin when ripe, known by people in Battambang as "Daung Khtis."

Daung Khtis is not coconut     milk, coconut juice, or coconut skin that has been scraped for milk, nor is it the embryo of a coconut. Instead, it has a creamy skin when ripe, and its skin is softer, mixed with condensed and sticky water that can be eaten. to know clearly: See the video in short

Its tree and fruit are not different from a normal coconut tree. I planted it from a seed, and it took five years to bear fruit. Each year, the tree grows taller. A bunch of fruits always has a few Daung Khtis when they are getting ripe, but some bunches don't have them.

To identify Daung Khtis, note that it is heavier than a normal coconut when ripe. When you shake it, you don't hear water sloshing around, but you might hear a bit of moving water. This is my notation.

Anyway, the people in Battambang province mostly know about Daung Khtis, while people in other provinces do not. Why do I share this Daung Khtis with them? This kind of Daung Khtis is also mentioned in a song by Sin Sisamuth and Ros Serey Sothea titled "Battambang Mean Avey Chhnganh."

It is often enjoyed with sweet water or sugar, and can be used to make smoothies.

The old people noted that Daung Khtis provides several health benefits for humans, such as supporting the skin and hair, and reducing pain in the hands and legs. For more information, please contact a doctor or refer to other documents.

Process to Grow Seedling Crops

 Process to Grow Seedling Crop

seedling

According to my experience, I select high-quality seeds. I treat them by soaking the seeds in warm water (around 30°C) for 15 minutes and remove any floating seeds. After that, I plant the treated seeds in a nursery bed or seedling trays and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. As the seedlings grow, I ensure they receive adequate sunlight and maintain a warm temperature. Once the seedlings have grown strong enough, I transplant them.

Steps to Grow Seedlings:

  • Seed Selection: Choose high-quality seeds that are suitable for your climate and soil.
  •  Seed Treatment: Soak the seeds in warm water (around 30°C) for 15 minutes. Remove any floating seeds. Ensuring High Seed Germination Rate
  •  Sowing: Plant the treated seeds in a nursery bed or seedling trays filled with nutrient-rich soil.
  •  Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  •  Light and Temperature: Ensure the seedlings receive adequate sunlight and maintain a warm temperature.
  •  Transplanting: Once the seedlings have grown strong enough, transplant them to their final growing location.

Ensuring High Seed Germination Rate

Seed Awakening

Cabbage
To ensure that your seeds have a 90% to 100% germination rate, you need to awaken them. My method involves using hot water at around 30°C. I place the seeds in the water for 15 minutes, then remove any floating seeds. The seeds that remain submerged are taken to the nursery. This is my standard practice for my nursery.

If you're interested, you can follow this method. For a clearer understanding, please watch the video. Ensuring High Seed Germination Rate

How to plant Khmer - Marigold in the pot

I would like to share with you how to successfully plant marigolds in a pot based on my experiences. Marigold seeds typically germinate within 5 to 7 days under optimal conditions. After germination, the seedlings will grow rapidly, then I can expect to see the first blooms in about 8 to 10 weeks.

Khmer Marigold B

Marigolds start blooming about two to two and a half months after sowing the seeds. The flowers will bloom beautifully if they grow quickly. Their growth and blooming will adapt based on the climate conditions.

First Step

I harvest marigold seeds once the flowers have fully bloomed and started to dry out. This usually happens about 8 to 10 weeks after planting. The flower heads will turn brown and dry, and the seeds inside will be dark and hard. I simply cut off the dried flower heads and gently break them open to collect the seeds. I make sure the seeds are completely dry before storing them in a cool, dry place for future planting.

Seedling

I take the seeds once they are completely dry and sow them in the ground. After sowing the seeds, they typically germinate within 5 to 7 days under optimal conditions. I observed that after germination, the seedlings grow rapidly.

Take video - drop the seed, dry the seed and Sawing the seed

Second Step

I took some seedlings from the ground to plant in a pot because they have grown enough to be transplanted. Alternatively, you can leave them in their original place.

If the seedlings are smaller than these, I place them in a nutrient-rich plastic container first. After the second week, I will plant them in the pots.

Start by planting the seedlings in the pot. In each pot, I plant three seedlings and cut the top part about one-third off to encourage more branches and produce nice flowers.

Flowers/Blooming

Based on my experience, it blooms for many months (from October to March). It can bloom year-round depending on the resilience of the plant and the climate of the region.

Method to Reproduce Strawberries (Cambodia)

Method to Reproduce Strawberries in Pots

Sharing my successful experience of around five years with planting strawberries in Cambodia, I can say that growing strawberries in Cambodia's weather is challenging. The ideal temperature range for strawberries is 25 to 30°C. They need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Strawberries grow well in compost-rich, loamy soil with excellent drainage. They should not be planted in frost conditions. It's important to maintain moderate humidity levels to prevent fungal diseases and promote healthy growth.

Natural Mushroom (Khmer called "Phset Kanhcho")

Natural Mushroom - Known in Khmer as Phset Kanhcho

Based on experiences, this type of mushroom, known in Khmer as Phset Kanhcho (Kanhcho Mushroom), that is growing in Cambodia. It thrives in soil with termite nests and moisture, typically from late August to October.

They are most commonly found in piles of earth heaped up by termites. There are three species: (1) Kanhcho Dom Bok, (2) Kanhcho Pong, and (3) Kanhcho Angkam.

This mushroom is a favorite food for Khmer farmers, who use it to make soup, fry it, mix it with ingredients and Prahok (a salted and fermented fish paste), then roast it. You will clearly understand how to make soup by watching the video at the link: Natural Mushroom (Khmer)

Process of making coconut coir

Coconut coir is a fantastic solution for enhancing soil quality and encouraging healthy plant growth due to various advantages:

Coconut coir has exceptional water retention properties, ensuring that plants receive continuous moisture. It improves aeration, prevents soil compaction, and stimulates root development. With a neutral pH, coconut coir is ideal for a variety of plants. It is a renewable and environmentally friendly resource that reduces waste and encourages sustainable gardening practices.

Additionally, coconut coir is resistant to fungus growth, resulting in a healthier environment for plants. Due to its high cation exchange capacity, it can efficiently hold and release nutrients.

Cambodian people use coconut coir to make compost soil, hatch grasshoppers, cover crops, nourish wood branches, feed eels, and nurture seeds, including other various needs.

How to plant mulberry in the basket - by cutting

How to plant Mulberry Trees

Location and Soil: Mulberries need full sun, well-drained soil, and 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. The soil should have a neutral pH of 5.5 to 7.0 and be enriched with compost.

Method to Plant: I have planted it by seed in the past by digging a hole twice the root ball size, planting, filling with soil, and watering it. I also planted it by cutting the nutrient root on the tree for 45 days old or when root was older and I nurtured it for 3 to 4 weeks before planting. Another method is to cut a 6-8 inch branch, remove the lower leaves, and plant it in moist soil, keeping it warm wait it grow the leaves and flowers - around 45 days old.

Monitoring and Caring: Regularly, especially in the first year, keep the soil moist and apply mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk. In early spring, use balanced fertilizer, but avoid fertilizing. In late winter, remove dead or diseased branches and shape the tree. Monitor for pests and use organic pesticides to protect the leaves or water the tree.

See the link to learn how to plant it. In this method, I cut the branch that had rooted on the tree, which I nourished for more than 45 days. I then nurtured it for 4 weeks before planting it. Planting Mulberry
